How cryotherapy has changed the lives of Topical steroid withdrawal TSW sufferers

You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous). Your nurse will give the injection slowly to try and prevent this. Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any problems with your eyes. Talk to your nurse or your dietitian about how to safely control your weight.

The aim of topical corticosteroid treatment is to bring eczema flare-ups back under control as quickly as possible. The doctors recommended I went back on steroids, a course of oral steroids and immunosuppressants. The dermatologist told me I was a fool and I would crawl back into there, begging her for steroids when I realised how silly my decision was.

Feeling hungrier can make it difficult to keep your weight down. Your appetite will go back to normal when you stop steroids – but some people need to diet to lose the extra weight. There are a number of reasons you might have steroids as part of your cancer treatment. Note that they are completely different from the other family of drugs, so called “anabolic steroids”, which are drugs sometimes taken by athletes.

This can make your eczema sorer but can also trigger other inflammatory skin issues like rosacea and acne, amongst others. Years ago, I was so seriously injured in a motorbike accident that I later discovered doctors had considered amputating my leg. I feel grateful and lucky that most people don’t even notice I limp.

My body was ripped to shreds with open wounds and scabs and I was red raw. Here at Cryozone Health, we have been treating several TSW sufferers with our Cryochamber and in this blog, we will talk about the skin condition and how cryotherapy has changed the lives of our TSW clients. Steroid acne is most often seen on the chest, but can also develop on the face, back, and neck. “Acne that develops because of steroid use tends to be red and angry along with prominent pus pimples,” Zeichner says.

How much topical corticosteroid should be applied?

It’s not advised that you use it for more than two weeks without a break. Most people only need to use the medicine once or twice a day for 3 to 7 days. Occasionally a doctor may suggest using it less frequently over a longer period of time. If you have been using hydrocortisone for a long time, your doctor may tell you to gradually reduce the amount you use before stopping completely.

Other medicines, food and drink

Whether you’re treating eczema or another inflamed skin condition like atopic dermatitis, using topical steroids is a common and often safe way to treat symptoms when they flare up. Very potent topical corticosteroids are not usually prescribed for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for very young children. Sometimes you may be prescribed them under the supervision of a skincare specialist (dermatologist). Most adults and children can use topical corticosteroids safely, but there are situations when they are not recommended.

If you are dealing with symptoms an have just stopped a topical steriod treatment, then TSW could be at the root of your issues. ‘Topical steroid withdrawal is a possibility if you have recently stopped long-term treatment with a moderate or high strength steroid. Anything that causes more irritation or discomfort to the skin must always be stopped as it will worsen inflammation.

Your child’s doctor will monitor their height and weight carefully for as long as they’re using hydrocortisone. This will help them spot any slowing down of your child’s growth and change their treatment if needed. In rare cases, using hydrocortisone for a long time can slow down the normal growth of children and teenagers. You’re more likely to have a serious side effect if you use a strong hydrocortisone treatment (such as hydrocortisone butyrate) or if you use hydrocortisone on a large patch of skin for a long time.

That smooth skin comes at a price — we steroid-takers call it the hamster face. Topical hydrocortisones are usually a last line of treatment for managing facial eczema and psoriasis. Try the Sönd alkalising range and see the difference it can make to your skin. You should find that using your prescribed cream or ointment for a week will clear up your affected skin.

The side effects that people worry about are thinning of the skin and suppression of the bodies own natural production of steroids which could affect growth. It is worth noting that there is a huge difference between the creams prescribed for eczema and high doses of cortisone taken orally. Month three came and bought with it extreme weight loss (I dropped to six and a half stone), hair loss and ooze (this was the protein from the blood because I had no skin cell barrier). By this point I couldn’t sleep in a bed and had to sleep sat up on a stool so that only my bum was touching something.

How to use topical corticosteroids

It’s very unlikely that other medicines – either prescribed or ones you buy from a pharmacy or shop – will affect the way hydrocortisone works. Your doctor will only prescribe hydrocortisone butyrate for you while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding if the benefits of the medicine outweigh the risks. Hydrocortisone butyrate is not normally recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Only use this treatment if a skin specialist (dermatologist) prescribes it and supervises your treatment.
